History of Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists
Dr. Chris Visser established Aid Animal Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1980. The practice started as a general veterinary clinic, which over the last few decades has transformed into a specialty veterinary dental practice with multiple locations.
In August of 2008, the Glendale office was established to better serve the dental needs of clients in the West Valley. At that time, the clinic name was formally changed to Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists (AZVDS). In December of 2009, AZVDS acquired the Gilbert office, which is located within the Arizona Veterinary Specialists building. In 2016 AZVDS established the Tucson office which is located within Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty & Emergency building. In May of 2020, the Glendale office relocated to Peoria, which is located within Canyon State Veterinary Specialties building. In July 2020, AZVDS established the Prescott office which is located within the Animal Medical Specialty Center of Prescott building.
The doctors and staff travel between the five practice locations to provide broad coverage of dental services to the valley. Dr. Visser became a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 1988 as part of the first class of Diplomates. Dr. Curt Coffman joined at the practice in 2000 and became a Diplomate of the AVDC in 2007. Dr. Michael Balke joined the practice in 2012 and became a Diplomate of the AVDC 2017.
The American Veterinary Dental College accredits AZVDS as an official resident training site. This allows AZVDS to employ additional veterinarians while providing them the required training for AVDC Board certification during their residency and their employment at AZVDS.
Dr. Visser has also been a member of the zoo’s Animal Health Committee since it was created. Dr. Visser recently passed being the chair of the committee on to Dr. Balke. All the AZVDS doctors donate their time and expertise in the treatment of oral and dental diseases in the zoo animals. AZVDS doctors have volunteered their services to the Phoenix zoo and Tucson Reid Park Zoo for many years.
In January 2015 Dr. Coffman and Dr. Balke formed Veterinary Dental Partners PLLC and acquired ownership of AZVDS. With the help of Veterinary Growth Partners and its Pathway Planning organizational process, AZVDS practices experienced exceptional growth between 2015 and 2020. AZVDS currently employs multiple Board-Certified Veterinary dentists as well as veterinary dental residents and is noted as a leader in providing specialty, veterinary dental care. In March 2020 AZVDS partnered with Pathway Veterinary Alliance LLC. This partnership provides PVA a foundation for specialty, referral pet dental care, and offers AZVDS infrastructure and resources to continue its growth.
